Chapter 13

Kennedy

“And what was I supposed to do?” I ask, my voice cracking.

“I don’t know, how about keep your mouth shut,” Kiara snaps.

“It’s not her fault,” Savannah says. “She was cornered.”

Kiara makes a dismissive motion with her hand as she paces the floor, her hands clenching and unclenching with each step.

“What else did he say?” she asks, stopping in front of the wall with her back to us.

“I don’t know…” I trail off trying to remember his words. It’s a blur of fear and worry. “He said I should have trusted them.”

“Them?” Kiara asks.

“Yeah, they talk like that, the Twins, it’s always the two of them.” Kiara nods for me to continue. “He said… he said no one would threaten our baby.”

“Shit,” Kiara curses. “Why didn’t you come to me immediately?”

“How am I supposed to know what to do?” I ask, choking on my own words. “This isn’t my life! None of this. I don’t want this, any of it. Oh, damn it…”

I rush to the bucket and get sick.

“Back off, Kiara,” Savannah says, kneeling next to me and holding my hair for me. “It’s not her fault.”

I stand, wiping my mouth with the back of my hand. Kiara is staring and making me uncomfortable.

“You’re right,” she says. “It’s mine. I should have handled them sooner.”

“What are you going to do?” I ask.

“What I should have done in the first place,” she says, striding for the door.

“Kiara, don’t hurt them,” I call after her.

She doesn’t answer or slow her step. My words are answered by the slamming of the door. The room is too small, closing in on me and taking my breath. I rub my face and fight for a full breath.

“It’s okay,” Savannah says, pulling me into her arms. “It’s fine. She’ll take care of everything.”

I push away from her. “No.”

“Kennedy, let her handle it,” Savannah says.

I shake my head. “I can’t. She’s going to hurt them or worse. They’re trying to do right by their child; I can’t let them be hurt because of that.”

“She won’t hurt them,” Savannah says.

“Won’t she?”

“No, even if she tried, Dominus would punish her or all of us. She won’t risk it.”

“Accidents happen in training, you’ve seen it as well as I have.”

Savannah shuts her mouth and purses her lips. She can’t argue with me; we’ve both seen it happen, severe injuries done during the gladiators’ training. Kiara has the two best gladiators in the house at her beck and call. One word from her and the Twins are in trouble.

I rush out the door without another word. Outside, I look both ways but don’t see any sign of Kiara. The storage room looks out on the sands where the gladiators train, and I see Anzil, Xyron, and even Spthifius out there working, but no sign of Kiara or the Twins.

I take a deep breath, trying to calm my nerves. She can’t have gone far. Left or right? It’s fifty-fifty chance that I get it correct. Left leads to the kitchens, and I don’t think she’d go there for anything.
